Plateau Style Carved Catlinite Pipe Pipestone Horse Turtle Axe Effigies Huge

$ 448.79

Availability: 57 in stock
  • Condition: Very Good Condition! This is a massive hand carved catlinite pipe adorned with a full body horse, turtle and axe head effigies from the plateau. I purchased it at a Colorado estate auction but the heirs could not tell me more about its provenance; since we don't know for certain who made it, I cannot call it native American made but it could be. The one thing for certain is that it is an extraordinary, ambitious and beautiful handmade item that is extremely unusual. It measures an incredible 14" L x 7" Hx 1.75" D and weighs approx 5 lb 3 oz. There is a little columbine flower etched into one side of the axe head that I believe could be the maker's mark or signature. Patina as found. One horse ear tip has broken off and there is a small chip at the top end of the bowl. Some light paint spatters. The base had green felt attached at one time and there is some residue. Displays really well and has a commanding presence- would be perfect on a fireplace mantle. Sure to be a favorite!
